Neuron Case Study: Providing Neuroscience Backing to the Management Cues Training Program
“People don’t leave companies, they leave managers”. Neuron interviewed over 100 C-suite executives, people leaders, and HR managers. This was the most common answer to the question: “Why do employees quit?”. This shows the direct impact poor management has on employee turnover. We went a step further and asked: “At the source, what causes high turnover, low talent attraction, quiet quitting, and low productivity?”. The overwhelming response: “Employee morale, mental health, and wellbeing”.
Neuron worked with Management Cues over 7 months to study this management-wellbeing relationship and quantify the effectiveness of the Management Cues training program with neuroscience. What we found was telling: managers showed statistically significant improvements in cognitive abilities, behavior, and managerial performance, and cognitive states are statistically significantly correlated with both self-reported preparedness and managerial performance! This demonstrates the imperative for better managerial training to benefit employee wellbeing and retention.
Neuron is on a mission to humanize employee experiences using neuroscience. In this study, Neuron used brain waves to prove that the Management Cues training program drastically improved managerial performance both mentally and behaviorally. Managers’ brainwaves were recorded while they tackled managerial tasks, before and 1 month after each one of the 6 training sessions. Using our proprietary algorithm we quantified managers’ real-time cognitive states: mental fatigue, cognitive stress, engagement, and cognitive load (i.e. mental effort). We also scored the managers’ responses to the tasks, asked how prepared they were to tackle them and their qualitative feedback about the program, and collected business key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Significant improvement in managers’ task scores in all six training topics post-training, the increases ranged from 87% to 372%.
- Mental fatigue, stress, and cognitive load all significantly decreased while engagement significantly increased.
- Self-reported preparedness statistically significantly increased post-training for every training except the first, showing managers’ initial overestimation of their readiness.
- Qualitative results such as short answers and reviews by managers: “The first time I answered this task, I thought this was okay to do because the manager decided it. But based on the training, I learned that it is not okay”, “I remembered how to tackle this because the way the scenario was taught was compelling, it was written like a story”
- Login error KPI decreased throughout the study, which positively benefits managers.
- Higher preparedness correlated with less mental fatigue, less mental stress, less cognitive load, and more engagement.
- Higher stress, fatigue, and cognitive load also meant worse performance, while higher engagement related to better performance.
The qualitative learnings from our 100+ interviews have now been quantitatively and neuroscientifically proven by Neuron! The statistically significant correlations proven by the study demonstrate that cognitive states are rooted in preparedness and managerial performance, and that managerial performance is significantly altered by employee mental health and morale.
