Neuron’s Neuroscience Mentorship Program for High School Students: Unlocking Personal and Academic Excellence for College Success

11/18/2024 - Written by: Ramitha Nagarajan, Marketing Intern

Neuron’s offering to high school students is a transformative, long-term mentorship program designed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge to excel personally, academically, and in college applications. This mentorship focuses on two primary objectives: to teach evidence-based strategies for studying, memorization, and public speaking, and to help students complete a large passion project to stand out in college applications.

Program Overview

The Neuron mentorship program includes personalized, 30-minute weekly one-on-one sessions between the mentor and student. The first session is a relaxed introduction, allowing both parties to assess if they’re a good fit for each other. During this meeting, the mentor provides an overview of the program and offers initial advice. A parent joins the introductory call to ensure alignment and that it’s the right mentor for their child.

Key Features of Neuron's Mentorship Program

What sets Neuron’s program apart are several unique features:

1. Flexible Start Times

Although the earlier, the better, students can begin their mentorship journey at any point during their high school years—ideally during freshman, sophomore, or junior year. For seniors, weekly sessions will typically be extended to one hour to maximize preparation during the final year.

2. Peer-Centric Mentorship

Neuron mentors are college students or recent college graduates. They are closely aligned in age with their mentees, ensuring they relate to each other and enabling mentors to offer advice that resonates with the student’s personal experiences and challenges. This makes it easier for mentees to act on their mentor’s feedback.

3. Passion Project

The mentors help students identify one big passion project and mentor them to complete it. The name of the game in college apps is not being well-rounded; students have to be the best at one thing they’re truly passionate about. And they have to show it, not say it. They’ll do exactly that with this passion project. Past projects from our mentees include: founding a club, starting a competition, organizing a conference, and creating a research or coding project.

4. Holistic College Prep

The mentorship program guides students in selecting the right courses, extracurriculars, sports, and clubs to optimize their college applications. By carefully curating these activities, Neuron helps students build a cohesive and compelling narrative for their college journey. When the time comes to craft their college applications, Neuron works with students to weave their personal story into every aspect of the application, including brainstorming and refining essay responses. We also provide comprehensive essay proofreading and editing.

5. Personal and Academic Growth

The goal of Neuron’s mentorship program extends beyond merely securing a college acceptance. It focuses on helping students grow personally and academically, building their confidence and ability to navigate high school and beyond. Their mentor provides the best strategies for studying, learning, note-taking, public speaking, and managing their time, as proven by neuroscience. With this program, students set up a structure around school and life that allows them to succeed and thrive in high school and eventually college, where they're on their own and fully independent.

Evidence-Based Strategies for Success

Neuron employs proven, neuroscience-backed methods for studying, note-taking, time management, and public speaking. Students learn how to organize their academic and extracurricular activities in a way that sets them up for success, both in high school and college. Our structured approach helps students become independent, confident learners, fully prepared to thrive in a collegiate environment.

Proven Track Record

Neuron’s mentorship program has helped students gain admission to prestigious institutions, including Columbia University, UC Berkeley, UCLA, New York University (NYU), University of Southern California (USC), Carnegie Mellon, and more.
